Who Is Coaching the Kids?

With school back in swing, tons of kids are getting back to their sports of choice — football, soccer, basketball, hockey.  But who’s coaching them?  That’s a question that every parent needs to seriously consider.  It’s also something that athletic programs need to think about.

The benefits to background checking all personnel related to any athletic programs are really quite extensive:

1.  If all coaches and other staff members (and volunteers) are background checked, that fact can be marketed to parents.  (And moms and dads love to know that their children are safe.)

2.  The cost of the background checks can be passed to coaches, etc., as long as that’s legal within your state, school district, etc.  (Please check with an attorney for specifics.)

3.  There will be no sudden “bad publicity” crises due to coaches taking advantage of the innocence of boys and girls.  (Make no mistake — that type of issue can bring an athletic program to its knees.)

4.  The kids will be safe.  Above all else, this is something that everyone involved can bank upon.  And it’ll also enable them to learn the skills needed to perform at the highest level they possibly can.  (Safetly begets security which begets openness to training.)

So… who is coaching the kids at your school district, school, community center, etc.?

  • Background Checks Now Mandatory for Florida Youth Sports Coaches

Thanks to a new bill passed by the Florida State Senate, all Florida youth sports coaches must now pass background checks in order to work with kids.

Would-be coaches will now be background screened on their criminal histories, including any sexual charges.  (Convicted sexual offenders would be immediately removed from the candidate pool for obvious reasons.)

This move comes from a slew of national cases of coaches taking advantage of and/or physically (or mentally) abusing their team players.  All-in-all, we think it will be an excellent law.

  • Applicants Who Lie, part III: References

telephone-buttonsMany employers refuse to call the references listed by applicants because they assume they’ll be useless.  However, that’s certainly not the case!

At VerifyProtect, we’ve done our fair share of reference checking… and if you think that all reference checks are created equal, you’re mistaken!

Recently, we had these jaw-dropping, shaking-your-head-in-disbelief experiences:

    • Many references have phone numbers that are “disconnected” or incorrect.  (Think that’s a mistake?  Probably not.)
    • Many references claim to have no knowledge of the applicant.  (Again, this shows how bold some desperate job hunters are!)
    • One reference we contacted was for a funeral director.  When we talked to the funeral director, the director said the applicant “had been to a few funerals”.  Thus, he could give no reference.  (Guess who didn’t get the job?)
    • Another reference we checked was for an incarcerated man.  The man had been in jail for two years.  (He couldn’t be reached…)

Applicants think you’ll be lazy about checking on them and therefore won’t catch them in their lies.  And they’re right… but only if you don’t do reference checks

If you want to make sure you’re getting the workers you deserve, it’s critical to take advantage of reference checking.
