If you’re like many working parents, you probably see back-to-school as a time when you need to start lining up a babysitter… or two. After all, once the end of the year gets underway, it’s nice to have someone you trust to call upon!
The problem is that many moms and dads equate “trust” with “going with gut instincts”. Instead of thoroughly background checking someone who will be watching their youngsters, they go with one or more of the following criteria:
a. Whether or not they “like” the babysitter.
b. How much the babysitter charges.
c. How available the babysitter is.
d. Whether they are satisfied with the babysitter’s references.
While these are all great criteria, they aren’t fallible because they don’t answer the bigger question: Does this babysitter have anything on his/her record that parents should know about?
Now, a 12-year-old babysitter probably isn’t going to have a criminal record, of course. But a college student or other adult could indeed have a past that would make a parent not want him or her to be in charge of any kids.
The good news is that it’s not impossible to get a thorough background check on potential babysitters and nannies. So don’t leave anything up to chance. Get the best, most reliable ’sitter you can find.

It’s fine to be a risk taker when it comes to business; after all, most entrepreneurs have a “risk taking” streak. It’s all part of their nature and why they start their companies to begin with.
However, it’s not always appropriate to take risks, especially in the area of background checking.
Background checks are a means of offering an organization:
- A higher level of security;
- An increased amount of stability; and
- A better, more solid workforce.
So why don’t more execs immediately turn to background checking when filling positions? They feel it’s unnecessary and they’re just willing to take the “risk” if it doesn’t pan out.
Bad idea.
Not implementing background checks can be devastating to a business and (sometimes permanently) stunt its growth. Read the papers — just one bad worker can completely wreak havoc on the future of a company.
It’s fine to take some chances, such as trying a new marketing campaign or opening the doors to a new store. But don’t mess around with background checking; it’s one area that’s been proven to be worth its weight in gold.

Getting something for free is always exciting, isn’t it? But if you’re relying only on free background checks, you’re playing a game of roulette.
Professional, comprehensive background checks that you invest in are worlds apart from those you can find freely online. Though you might be able to uncover some information about potential employees if you surf the Internet for quite some time, you’re not going discover everything you need to know.
Some of the major advantages to paying for background checks include:
- You won’t have to spend copious amounts of time hunting for incriminating info on the Internet. (Trust us — you could spend hours and hours and still not have a solid report. Isn’t your time worth the price of a background check you can trust?)
- You will have a guarantee from a long-time, trusted background checking company like VerifyProtect. And that means a heck of a lot.
- You can customize the information that you need. This gives you freedom, whereas if you do some online searches, you’ll get what you get… and it might not be what you want or require.
- You don’t have to worry that you’ve missed something because it’ll all be available in front of you.
Again, we’re all for saving money wherever possible. But background checking isn’t a place to pinch pennies.

If you’ve ever been set up on a really bad blind date, you know how valuable it would have been to had that date “screened”, at least informally. But how about formally?
There’s a move afoot to encourage online dating services to background check their applicants in order to better serve the customers looking for friendship, love or companionship.
Would background checks actually help? We definitely think so — check out these top three advantages to online dating sites’ comprehensively screening clients:
→ There would be a smaller, but stronger, pool of candidates from which to choose.
→ The online dating company could ask for a premium price.
→ The clients of online dating sites would feel more comfortable with this kind of “cyber dating” knowing that part of the worry has been erased.
This isn’t to say that background checking would be a cure-all for every concern a dater has. But it could produce huge advantages for both the clients and the company.
We’ll keep you posted if/when we learn of an online dating service that’s switched over to background checks!

‘Tis the season for kids’ camps galore! And while that’s a very good thing for both the youngsters and their parents, it’s critical for moms, dads and grandparents to make sure that all camp personnel are background checked.
It might surprise many parents and guardians to learn that background checking of camp counselors, coaches, etc., is not standard. In fact, many camps background check no one from the top down. There’s just a cursory interview, possible checking of references, and, voila, the camp employees are given carte blanche to have access to kids.
This isn’t meant to terrify parents or to keep children from ever going to camps, of course. It’s just meant as a serious warning.
Parents need to ask the following questions BEFORE allowing any camp to have access to their sons or daughters:
1. Has your camp staff been background checked? If so, by whom?
2. What is the criteria for camp staff to be accepted by the camp?
3. Do you check sex offender registries before hiring camp staff?
4. How much access do camp staff have to be alone with any one camper?
5. What background checking company do you use?
Again, this makes sense… and it also helps avoid a serious issue. Though some moms and dads might feel awkward with these inquiries, they’ll be happy they asked. And the kids will, too.

It happened recently in New London, Wisconsin. A school bus driver was charged with sexually assaulting the kids on his bus. He had slipped through the cracks because he was hired before the company for whom he worked was expected to perform background checks on all drivers.
Yep, he’d been employed for 33 years without a background check. Ouch.
Scary?
You bet.
And it’s something that occurs more frequently than a lot of people would expect.
There are numerous companies that have background checks in place now that didn’t when some of their workers were originally brought on as a part of the team. Thus, even a seemingly secure organization could be hiding a felon or sexual offender.
This is why it’s critical for companies who implement background checking on new hires to continue making this retroactive, if possible.
Will there be a lot of irritation among personnel? Certainly.
But if the workplace is made safer, it’s worth it.

With all the media hubbub surrounding the bad habits and poor choices of some NBA players, it might come as a surprise that the NBA actually has a very strict background screening process in place. But the truth of the matter is that their background checks weed out the “bad apples” in no time flat.
As Gregg Polinsky, the director of player personnel of the New Jersey Nets, recently noted in an article when discussing the lessons that college basketball programs could learn from the NBA’s stringent background checking rules:
“When you talk to enough people,’’ he said, “you can put together the puzzle of the person’s personality type.’’
If you’re a business person, you need to start thinking more like the NBA about your “players”! One toxic athlete can bring a whole team to its knees and wind up costing much more than a thorough background check ever would.

A recent incident has brought questions to the table in terms of the U.S. Government’s background checking policy for census workers.
In Indianapolis, Indiana, a census worker allegedly raped a young woman after essentially “casing” the home to determine when the woman would be alone.
As a response to this shocking crime, government officials insist that their background screening methodologies are rigorous and that all census workers must pass the background checks before being allowed to work.
The public is asked to always be on alert when talking to census workers, who should never force their ways into someone’s home. Additionally, if a census worker behaves inappropriately or makes an individual feel comfortable, it’s recommended that the census worker’s name be taken and submitted to the local authorities.

The Milton Hershey School, Hershey, PA, recently dealt with a particularly unpleasant scandal involving the molestation of students. The perpetrator is the son of a Milton Hershey School houseparent (the school offers room and board to students) who assaulted and abused students 20 years ago.
The victims finally came forward and identified the person responsible several months ago, and Milton Hershey School recently settled in the case, giving the victims an undisclosed amount. Meanwhile, the perpetrator has been charged and sentenced.
Since the molestation 20 years ago, the Milton Hershey School revealed to reporters that it has changed its background checking policy on visitors and those who would be accessible to their students.

A report from Nashville, Tennessee’s NewsChannel5.com reveals what we’ve seen more and more often recently: School districts that are mandating all parent volunteers go through background checking.
Although many parents don’t appreciate the idea of being forced to prove they are safe to work with kids, most are understanding of the process. And why shouldn’t they? Background screening of all parent volunteers is a good way to ensure the safety of children (not to mention other volunteers and school staff members.)
We’d like to know if your local school district(s) have adopted a policy of background checking parent volunteers? If so, how was the policy received?
