Have a Safe, Holly Jolly Holiday

If you’re part of an industry that is hiring seasonal workers, it’s time to be particularly vigilant about background checks.  Even though these types of workers will only be working under your auspices for a short time, they’ll still be your first impression as far as the public is concerned… so you want to make a good one!

To make your life easier, though, you should tell any job applicants upfront that they will have to pass certain background checks in order to be put on staff, even for a few weeks or a couple of months.  Make sure they understand what that means, too; some may not have had to go through background checking before.  Be certain to let them ask questions… and be certain you have the answers!

Remember that background checks are not a way of penalizing people; they are a way of making your workplace more secure for everyone, from the receptionist to the soda vendor.

School Bus Drivers Must Pass Background Checks

One of the biggest issues for many parents is how their children will be getting to and from school.  And for plenty of families, the answer is simple and traditional: the yellow school bus.  But what’s become perfectly clear is the fact that, in this day and age, bus drivers must be able to pass comprehensive background checks in order to assume their roles.

If you think this just costs money and is a frivolous requirement, think again.  Many school districts use their intensive background checking processes to encourage parents to allow their sons and daughters to use the school transportation.  For instance, in the Douglas County School System, North Carolina, bus drivers are put through a thorough background check and a rigorous 64 hours of training.  That’s before they ever are allowed to be in charge of little (or big) kids.

In North Carolina, the state only requires 12 hours of training for bus drivers, so Douglas County School System has set itself apart.  Douglas County School System also has a tremendously rigorous interviewing and hiring system that includes criminal checks, drug testing, motor vehicle checks, pre-employment physical exams and reference checks.

The upshot for all this planning and preparation?  In the past six years, Douglas County School System has never had one accident or problem with any of its substitute or regular bus drivers.  It’s a definite testament to the power of background checking and proper set up.

First-Time Indiana Health Care Workers May Pay for Background Checks

New legislation has been introduced in Indiana which could make a huge impact on the health care market.

If the legislation passes, health care workers who are entering the field for the first time and therefore seeking state licenses will be required to pay for their own background checks.

As with most bills of this nature, the impetus for the legislation came from several incidents in which health care workers’ prior criminal convictions had not been revealed to employers.  Eventually, those health care workers committed crimes again and the problem was brought to light.

The proposed Indiana legislation would cover numerous types of health care workers — nurses, dentists, doctors — but the exact titles have not yet been disclosed.

No word has been given as to whether or not the bill would necessitate over a quarter million of the state’s already-employed health care workers to pay for background checks in order to renew their state licenses.

  • Background Checks Now Mandatory for Florida Youth Sports Coaches

Thanks to a new bill passed by the Florida State Senate, all Florida youth sports coaches must now pass background checks in order to work with kids.

Would-be coaches will now be background screened on their criminal histories, including any sexual charges.  (Convicted sexual offenders would be immediately removed from the candidate pool for obvious reasons.)

This move comes from a slew of national cases of coaches taking advantage of and/or physically (or mentally) abusing their team players.  All-in-all, we think it will be an excellent law.
