5 Pros of Offering Background Checks at Dating Sites

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

There’s a strong movement afoot to push for background checks at online dating sites.  But what are the real pros of providing this kind of service?

Below, we look at five of the biggest advantages for sites who are willing to take this measure:

5 Pros to Offering Background Checks at Online Dating Sites:

  1. Protection.  It’s nice to know that if you’re using a particular dating site, people with nefarious backgrounds or criminal records have been screened.
  2. Convenience.  It’s one less thing that an online dater needs to do him- or herself.
  3. Marketing.  Being able to tout your dating site as being one of the only to offer background checks on registrants is a great selling point.
  4. Value.  A site can actually command higher rates from members if they’re able to offer this kind of security.
  5. PR.  The public relations benefit is tough to quantify, but let’s just say that “no news is good news”.  What dating site wants to court the possibility of a media circus if one of their members hurts another in some way?

In the end, we’re all for background checks at online dating locales.  What do you think?

  • Another Story Where Criminal Checks Could Have Made a Difference

    Friday, March 12th, 2010

Places like nursing homes don’t regularly conduct checks into potential residents’ criminal records, as this story from Knoxville, TN shows.

In a nutshell, the article tells of a nursing home being sued because a known sex offender was living at the senior home and in 2009 allegedly sexually abused one of the residents.  The alleged perpetrator of the crime was convicted of rape and incest 18 years ago, and although the nursing home staff knew of this resident’s questionable past, they said nothing to other residents.  Hence, the lawsuit from the victim’s family.

In a published response from the nursing home, they noted:

“With respect to residents, it has not been industry practice to conduct criminal background checks on the prospective seniors who are seeking residence or health services. Recently, however, there has been a trend to screen prospective residents against state sex offender registries if they are available. [We have] implemented this process. “

While it’s wonderful that the nursing home is now conducting criminal checks on potential residents, it’s tragic that the reason had to be as a result of an avoidable (possible — as the case hasn’t yet been resolved) sexual assault.

  • Some of Florida’s Businesses to Use Tighter Screening Measures

    Friday, October 23rd, 2009

In recent months, it’s become apparent that Florida’s current laws regarding the hiring practices of caregivers must be reviewed.  To the horror of the families whose loved ones are being taken care of by past felons (or those who shouldn’t have been allowed to work in caregiving capacities), it’s been brought to light that many of the background screening policies being used today are anything but effective.

A long-term investigation by the Sun-Sentinel uncovered the stunning fact that over 3,000 persons with criminal records were working with elderly and/or disabled individuals.  Almost as many with similar backgrounds had been approved to work with kids.  The overarching problem is that facilities have been appointing people to positions before receiving background screening results, a practice that is not unlawful in the state of Florida.

Though the bill hasn’t yet been passed, it’s likely to receive a resounding level of support.  As many political figures in the state have pointed out, it’s long overdue.
