3 Reasons to Background Check Interns

If you’re an organization that is giving interns (e.g., high schoolers, college-age individuals, non-traditional students) an opportunity to learn at your company, bravo!  What you’re doing is invaluable… but don’t forget that you still need to take precautions.  And that includes background checking all interns.

Why?  Below are 3 terrific reasons to always background check the interns who are coming through your doors:

1.  Interns Have Access to Information

Just because they’re called interns, you can never forget that they’ll have access to customer data and information.  Would you want someone with a criminal record to have that kind of opportunity?

2.  Interns Need to Get Accustomed to Being Background Checked

Any intern has to realize that he or she is going to be background checked in a “real world” situation, too.  And they might as well start their education at your business.

3.  You May Want to Hire the Intern in the Future

Perhaps you’d get lucky and really like the intern who works for you.  In that case, you will have already vetted him or her through a comprehensive background check!

More Schools Implement Stringent Background Checks for Volunteers

Years ago, being a volunteer at your child’s school was a cut-and-dry proposition.  You basically told the administration, teacher, PTO/PTA, district or school staff that you wanted to help out… and the doors were held open for you to come in.  Today, it’s much different.  In fact, background checks of all volunteers is becoming more and more mainstream.

Typically, background checks are expected for any volunteers who help out, whether they have hands-on access to kids or not.  However, that doesn’t mean that parents, grandparents and guardians need to undergo background checks to attend school plays, community events, fundraisers and other special experiences.

The cost of these types of background checks is often passed along to the parents.  Though some moms and dads feel the district or school should pay, having them invest does weed out the better candidates (aka, the ones who really want to be in the school with their kids.)

We’d like to know if your school insists upon background checks for all volunteers?  Fill out the poll below!

  • Background Checking Takes Guesswork Out of Hiring Process

If you’ve ever had to interview a job candidate, you know that there can be a ton of guesswork involved for both parties.  But when you add background checking to the mix, you take away much of that guesswork, replacing it with solid facts.

What elements of guesswork does background checking candidates for positions at your company help to remove?

    1. Fear of Hiring Someone with a Criminal Past.
    2. Worry That There is Something Wrong on Resume That You’re Not Catching.
    3. Concern That You’ll Be Opening the Doors to Future Lawsuits.
    4. Fear of Hiring the “Wrong” Person for the Job.
    5. Worry That the Person You’re Interviewing isn’t Being Truthful.

Systematic, comprehensive background checking on all job candidates will make your job much easier.  Rather than relying on your “gut”, you’ll have specific information that will enable you to make hiring decisions about which you can feel wholly comfortable.

  • Nightclub in Arizona Institutes Background Checks… on Patrons

It’s a decidedly unusual story — Pearl, a nightclub in Arizona, has instituted a policy of background checking patrons.

This very controversial (and unique) decision comes after a murder occurred at the exclusive night spot.  Thus, they are planning to background check “some” people who come through the doors.

Though it’s not clear how this process is going to work for them, it is definitely notable in terms of its creativity.  It also shows how powerful a business’s need for background checks can be.  In the case of Pearl, instituting background checks on patrons allows them to:

    a.  Market a sense of safety to people considering coming to their facility.

    b.  Handle the crisis management of having a murder occur at their facility.

    c.  Make their competitors question their own standards of “checking” those who want entrance into their nightclubs.

What do you think?  Is the background checking that Pearl is implementing a thumbs up or thumbs down?  Would it make you more or less likely to visit the Tucson, AZ, nightclub?

  • Take Risks in Business… Just Not with Background Checks

It’s fine to be a risk taker when it comes to business; after all, most entrepreneurs have a “risk taking” streak.  It’s all part of their nature and why they start their companies to begin with.

However, it’s not always appropriate to take risks, especially in the area of background checking.

Background checks are a means of offering an organization:

    • A higher level of security;
    • An increased amount of stability; and
    • A better, more solid workforce.

So why don’t more execs immediately turn to background checking when filling positions?  They feel it’s unnecessary and they’re just willing to take the “risk” if it doesn’t pan out.

    Bad idea.

Not implementing background checks can be devastating to a business and (sometimes permanently) stunt its growth.  Read the papers — just one bad worker can completely wreak havoc on the future of a company.

It’s fine to take some chances, such as trying a new marketing campaign or opening the doors to a new store.  But don’t mess around with background checking; it’s one area that’s been proven to be worth its weight in gold.
