Who Is Coaching the Kids?

With school back in swing, tons of kids are getting back to their sports of choice — football, soccer, basketball, hockey.  But who’s coaching them?  That’s a question that every parent needs to seriously consider.  It’s also something that athletic programs need to think about.

The benefits to background checking all personnel related to any athletic programs are really quite extensive:

1.  If all coaches and other staff members (and volunteers) are background checked, that fact can be marketed to parents.  (And moms and dads love to know that their children are safe.)

2.  The cost of the background checks can be passed to coaches, etc., as long as that’s legal within your state, school district, etc.  (Please check with an attorney for specifics.)

3.  There will be no sudden “bad publicity” crises due to coaches taking advantage of the innocence of boys and girls.  (Make no mistake — that type of issue can bring an athletic program to its knees.)

4.  The kids will be safe.  Above all else, this is something that everyone involved can bank upon.  And it’ll also enable them to learn the skills needed to perform at the highest level they possibly can.  (Safetly begets security which begets openness to training.)

So… who is coaching the kids at your school district, school, community center, etc.?

  • 5 Reasons to Background Screen Your Freelance Staff

A lot of companies have recognized just how much of a cost savings they can see when they hire freelance staff to perform various functions.  From virtual CFOs to marketers, freelancers are ready to tackle projects.  But that doesn’t mean you should forgo common sense when hiring them

Below are 5 great reasons to background screen all freelance staff members:

    1. They’ll be representing your company.  The public won’t care if they are freelance or not if they do something wrong!
    2. They will likely have access to some confidential data.  Can you afford a breach?
    3. Their past nefarious decisions can ruin your reputation.  Who wants to hire someone with a criminal record a mile long?
    4. They might not be who they say they are.  We all know people sometimes lie on their resumes.  Who’s to say your freelancer isn’t stretching the truth?
    5. A reference checkcan tell you so much.  If you call the freelancer’s references, you’ll have a better idea of whether to move forward with him or her.

Don’t take a chance!  Background screen anyone on your team, even those who aren’t full-time employees.

  • CA Nursing Home Staff NOT Undergoing Regular Background Checks

wheelchairIt’s stories like these that get people to sit up and take notice — from the state of California comes an announcement that there are no regulations regarding the performing of background checks on nursing home staff members.

This is a terrifying thought for residents of CA nursing homes and their families, as it opens the door for neglect, abuse… and worse.

As specialists in the industry of background checks and screening, we’ve heard every excuse in the book when it comes to why companies and nonprofits don’t check their personnel:

    “It’s too expensive!”  (It’s not.)

    “It’s unnecessary!”  (It’s not.)

“I can find all the information I need without paying a third party!”  (You can’t.)

Here’s hoping that nursing homes in CA begin to take the protection of the people in their care more seriously in the future.
